Homeless Persons Dental Program

Dental Programs for Homeless People

There are a number of programs targeting homeless people including Ozanam, the North Yarra Homeless People's Program and the Homeless Youth Dental Program.Ozanam Community Dental Program. Ozanam Community Centre is run by St Vincent De Paul Society and offers day facilities, activities and meals, in addition to medical and dental services for homeless people.
To access the dental clinic, homeless people and those in supported accommodation must hold a valid Health Care or Pensioner Concession Card and be referred to the clinic by a caseworker. Emergency, general and denture services are available to eligible people. The service is free to those who have been assessed as being eligible. There are no waiting lists for the service with waiting times for general dental care ranging from 3 to 6 weeks. Emergency care is provided within 24 hours, where possible.

North Yarra Homeless People's Program

This program commenced in July 2001 and provides a comprehensive dental program for holders of valid Health Care or Pensioner Concession Cards who are homeless or living in insecure housing. The service is free to eligible clients. There are no waiting lists for the service with waiting times for general dental care generally with 1 to 2 weeks. Emergency care is provided within 24 hours, where possible.

North Yarra Community Health Homeless Youth Dental Program

The Homeless Youth Dental Program commenced in 1995 in response to local needs in the Barwon Region and Inner South Eastern suburbs of Melbourne. The definition of homelessness may extend to those in supported accommodation.

Homeless young people aged between 15 and 24 are eligible for dental care and generally are holders or dependants of holders of valid Health Care or Pensioner Concession Cards. They are usually treated upon referral by a caseworker. Both emergency and general dental care are available to eligible clients.

The service is free to eligible clients. There are no waiting lists for the service with waiting times for general dental care ranging from 3 to 6 weeks. Emergency care is provided within 24 hours, where possible.
